Madame SouSou
Madame Sousou is a French Bistro in Fitzroy and I think it became famous when Justin Timberlake took Jessica Biel there for lunch when he was down under for one of his concerts. It has been awhile since my husband and I were there, so we thought we might revisit the place and prepare our tongues for some French cuisine before we travel to the UK. Another couple joined us for dinner as well (we are trying hard to catch up with as many friends and family before we are off to the UK).
I was surprised that it was nearly full for a Wednesday night. It probably fits about 35-40 people. The restaurant has quirky French art deco along one wall and French Chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. It was not one of those fine dining places with stiff linen which was good because I really wanted a casual meal and a relaxing evening.
The wine list was decent (not that I'm a connoiseur of wine, but the Bordeaux style wine that was chosen from the list by our friend went really well with our meal) and the menu was on a single page.We started our meal with some white wine mussels (which was really yummy), a pork terrine and a Chacuturie plate (mixed preserved meats with olives). For mains, we ordered duck confit with braised cabbage and cherry jus, 500g T-bone steak with Paris butter, crumbed pork cutlet and Beef sirloin with wild mushroom sauce (the special for the day). Everything was satisfactory except the crumbed pork which was really, really fatty and half of it was actually rare.
Nothing really caught our eyes on the dessert menu, and since we were talking about Spain and Churros during dinner, we thought we might duck into San Churros which is located two blocks from Madame Sousou.
Overall, it was a decent experience. Actually, it was the company that made it a great night.
